|
We select products for the eco+waza website based on five basic criteria, which are outlined below. And while we hope every product gets a check in each category, it’s not always the case. So that’s where you, the consumer, can help make a difference. Share your voice about products directly to the producers in our “User’s Voice” section.

In the simplest terms, Cradle-to-Cradle (or C2C) urges us to “remake the way we make things.” This means taking into account the entire life cycle of a product, from concept and design to manufacturing and eventually recycling or disposal, as well as materials and ease of use/assembly. A fruitful co-existence between commerce and the environment is the ultimate goal of C2C, in which products ultimately produce “zero waste.”
How do we know how much water or energy goes into producing a pair of shoes, a bicycle or even a ball of yarn? Lots apparently! But a growing number of producers are actively trying to reduce their environmental footprint by devising manufacturing processes that use less energy and water and produce less waste and contamination.
Imagine a pair of jeans that you wear for years and years and that actually get more comfortable and attractive with each passing year. It is this sort of long life cycle that makes the jeans eco-friendly in their own way; and it is this sort of philosophy we’d like to see applied to all consumer areas. It is up to us to live “greener” lives, and by choosing products that last a long time, we are reducing our environment footprint.
The Japanese are well known for being specialists rather than generalists. If a person learns a trade, craft or hobby, a strong sense of commitment, dedication and focus typically emerges. This quality comes through in Japan’s “monozukuri” or manufacturing spirit, which economies the world over are seeking to duplicate. And while Japan is the world leader in hybrid cars, high-speed trains and electronic goods, there is always a “twinkle of analog” in these digital goods—a “made in Japan” spirit—coming through in each product or technology. And it is this spirit we hope is visible in products selected for the eco+waza site.
Each of us has the ability to lead a more environment-friendly life. The choices we make every day in the products we buy, the foods we eat and the activities we undertake, all add up to our “footprint.” We can try to reduce this by seeking better alternatives that are good for the planet, but that also enrich our lives. Products that fall under this category include ones that offer you an eco alternative and that enhance or create an “eco-style” life. After all, living for Mother Earth should be a pleasure and a joy—not a burden.
Items are selected based on self-report by companies, interview with representatives and by visiting sites.
